Indication Dosage

Hyoscine butyl bromide is indicated in acute spasm, as in renal or biliary colic, in radiology for differential diagnosis of obstruction and to reduce spasm and pain in pyelography, and in other diagnostic procedures where spasm may be a problem (e.g. gastroduodenal endoscopy).

Symptomatic Relief Of Gastro-intestinal Or Genitourinary Disorders Characterised By Smooth Muscle Spasm: 

  • Adults Children Above 12 Yrs: 20 Mg 4 Times A Day 
  • Children 6-11 Yrs: 10 Mg 3 Times A Day 

Irritable Bowel Syndrome: 

  • Adult: 10 Mg 3 Times A Day; Increased If Necessary Up To 20 Mg 4 Times A Day 

Acute Spasm, Spasm In Diagnostic Procedures: 

By IM Inj, Or By Slow IV Inj: 

  • Adult: 20 Mg, Then After 30 Minutes 20 Mg Again If Required, Dose May Be Repeated More Frequently In Endoscopy; Maximum 100 Mg Per Day 

Excessive Respiratory Secretions In Palliative Care: 

Oral: 

  • Children 1 Month-1 Yr: 300-500 Mcg/kg 3-4 Times A Day (max. Per Dose 5 Mg); 
  • 2-4 Yrs: 5 Mg 3-4 Times A Day; 
  • 5-11 Yrs: 10 Mg 3-4 Times A Day; 
  • 12-17 Yrs: 10-20 Mg 3-4 Times A Day 

By IM Inj, Or By IV Inj: 

  • Children 1 Month-4 Yrs: 300-500 Mcg/kg 3-4 Times A Day (max. Per Dose 5 Mg) 
  • 5-11 Yrs: 5-10 Mg 3-4 Times A Day 
  • 12-17 Yrs: 10-20 Mg 3-4 Times A Day 

By Sc Inj: 

  • Adult: 20 Mg Every 4 Hours If Required, Adjusted According To Response To Up To 20 Mg Every 1hour. 

By Sc Infusion: 

  • Adult: 20-120 Mg/24 Hours 

Bowel Colic (in Palliative Care): 

Oral: 

  • Children 1 Month-1 Yr: 300-500 Mcg/kg 3-4 Times A Day (max. Per Dose 5 Mg) 
  • 2-4 Yrs: 5 Mg 3-4 Times A Day 
  • 5-11 Yrs: 10 Mg 3-4 Times A Day 
  • 12-17 Yrs: 10-20 Mg 3-4 Times A Day 

By IM Inj, Or By IV Inj:

By Sc Inj: 

  • Adult: 20 Mg Every 4 Hours If Required, Adjusted According To Response To Up To 20 Mg Every 1 hour. 

By Sc Infusion: 

  • Adult: 60-300 Mg/24 Hours 

Transdermal Patch: For Motion Sickness: 

  • Adults: 1 Patch On Hairless Area Of Skin Behind Ear 5-6 Hr Before Journey. If Necessary, Replace With New Patch Behind Other Ear After 72 Hr. 
  • Children: Not Recommended.

Content

  • Inj Per ml: Hyoscine-n-butylbromide 20mg; Solution; Amp.
  • Syp: Per 5 ml: Hyoscine-n-butylbromide 5mg.
  • Tab: Hyoscine-n-butylbromide 10mg.
  • Transdermal Patch: Per Patch: Hyoscine 1.5mg.

Contra Indications

  • Myasthenia Gravis (but May Be Used To Decrease Muscarinic Side-effects Of Anticholinesterases), Paralytic Ileus, Pyloric Stenosis, Toxic Megacolon, And Prostatic Enlargement.

  • Reduced Bronchial Secretions
  • Urinary Urgency And Retention
  • Dilatation Of The Pupils With Loss Of Accommodation
  • Photo-Phobia
  • Dry Mouth
  • Flushing And Dryness Of The Skin.
  • Side effects That Occur Occasionally Include Confusion
  • Constipation
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Giddine
