The influenza vaccine is a vaccine used to prevent the flu caused by influenza viruses. The vaccine is made up of inactivated or weakened virus particles that stimulate the immune system to produce antibodies that can recognize and fight against the virus.
The indications of influenza vaccine include:
- Prevention of influenza: The primary indication for the influenza vaccine is to prevent influenza, which is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. The vaccine works by stimulating the immune system to produce antibodies that can recognize and fight against the viruses.
- Protection of high-risk individuals: Influenza vaccine is particularly important for individuals who are at high risk of developing severe illness or complications from influenza, including young children, older adults, pregnant women, individuals with chronic medical conditions, and healthcare workers.
- Reduction of transmission: By preventing influenza in individuals, influenza vaccine can also help reduce the spread of the virus to others, including those who may be at high risk of developing severe illness.
- Annual vaccination: Since influenza viruses can change from year to year, the vaccine is updated annually to ensure that it provides protection against the strains of influenza viruses that are most likely to be circulating during the upcoming flu season.
Dosage:
- For adults and children aged 6 months and older: A single dose of influenza vaccine is recommended annually. For some individuals, such as those who have never received the vaccine before or who are receiving the vaccine for the first time, a second dose may be recommended.
- For children aged 6 months to 8 years who have never received the Vaccine Before: Two doses of influenza vaccine are recommended, with the second dose administered at least 4 weeks after the first dose.
- For adults aged 65 years and older: A high-dose influenza vaccine is available, which contains four times the amount of antigen as the standard vaccine. This is recommended for older adults, who may have a weaker immune response to the standard vaccine.
