Indication Dosage

Loperamide is a type of medication used for several indications, including:

Faecal Incontinence: Loperamide is used to treat faecal incontinence, a condition in which an individual is unable to control their bowel movements.

Dosage:

  • Adults & Children Above 12 Yrs: Initially 4 Mg, Followed By 2 Mg For Up To 5 Days, Dose To Be Taken After Each Loose Stool; Usual Dose 6-8 Mg Daily; Maximum 16 Mg Per Day 
  • Children 4-7 Years: 1 Mg 3-4 Times A Day For Up To 3 Days Only; 8-11 Years: 2 Mg 4 Times A Day For Up To 5 Days; 

Chronic Diarrhea: Loperamide is used to treat chronic diarrhea, by slowing down the contractions of the intestines and reducing the frequency of bowel movements.

Dosage:

  • Adult: Initially 4-8 Mg Daily In Divided Doses, Adjusted According To Response; Maintenance Up To 16 Mg Daily In 2 Divided Doses. 

Acute Diarrhea: Loperamide is used to treat acute diarrhea, by slowing down the contractions of the intestines and reducing the frequency of bowel movements.

Dosage:

  • Adult: Initially 500 Mcg Daily, Adjusted According To Response, Maximum Daily Dose To Be Given In Divided Doses, 16 Mg Per Day 

Pain of Bowel Colic in Palliative Care: Loperamide is sometimes used as a treatment for the pain of bowel colic in palliative care, as it can help regulate bowel movements and relieve symptoms.

Dosage:

  • Adult: 2-4 Mg 4 Times A Day

Contra Indications

  • Conditions Where Inhibition Of Peristalsis Should Be Avoided, Acute Ulcerative Colitis, Pseudo Membranous Colitis, Abdominal Disten-sion.

  • Rare: Fatigue

  • Stevens-johnson Syndrome
  • Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis
  • Urinary Retention.
