Solutions Affecting The Electrolyte Balance

Indication Dosage

Sodium Bicarbonate tablets are indicated for the relief of occasional heartburn, acid indigestion, and upset stomach. This over-the-counter medication helps neutralize excess stomach acid, providing temporary relief from discomfort associated with these conditions. 

Cardiac Arrest: 

  • Infants: 1 Meq/kg Slow Ivp Initially; May Repeat With 0.5 Meq/kg In 10 Min One Time, Or As indicated by patient acid-base Status. 
  • Children & Adults: 1 Meq/kg Ivp Initially; May Repeat With 0.5 Meq/kg In 10 Min One Time Or As Indicted By Patients Acid-base Status. 

Metabolic Acidosis: 

If Blood Gases & Ph Measurements Are Available: 

  • Neonates, Infants & Children: Hco3 (meq) = 0.3 X Weight (kg) X Base Deficit (meq/l) Or Hco3 (meq) = 0.5 X Weight (kg) X [24 - Serum Hco3 (meq)]. 
  • Adults: Hco3 (meq) = 0.2 X Weight (kg) X Base Deficit (meq/l) Or Hco3 (meq) = 0.5 X Weight (kg) X [24 - Serum Hco3 (meq)]. 

If Acid-base Status Is Not Available:

  • Dose For Older Children & Adults: 2-5 Meq/kg Iv Infusion Over 4-8 Hr; Subsequent Doses Should Be Based On Patients Acid-base Status.
