• Dextromethorphan

Expectorants, on the other hand, work by thinning and loosening mucus or phlegm in the airways, making it easier to cough up. They are commonly used to treat coughs that are accompanied by congestion and mucus.

Generics May be in Cough Expectorants:

• Guaifenesin
• Ipecacuanha
• Ammonium chloride
• Potassium iodide
• Ambroxol 

In some cases, a combination of a cough suppressant and an expectorant may be used to treat coughs that have both dry and productive components. This can help relieve coughing while also making it easier to clear mucus from the airways.
