Indication Dosage
Ferric carboxymaltose (FCM) is an intravenous iron preparation, belonging to the class of iron carbohydrate complexes. It is primarily indicated for the treatment of iron deficiency anemia when oral iron supplementation is not effective, not tolerated, or inappropriate. Some common indications for ferric carboxymaltose include:
- Iron deficiency anemia is due to various causes, such as chronic kidney disease, inflammatory bowel disease, malabsorption, or blood loss from heavy menstrual bleeding or gastrointestinal bleeding.
- Iron deficiency anemia in pregnancy, when oral iron supplements do not provide adequate improvement or cause intolerable side effects.
- Preoperative treatment for iron deficiency anemia in patients undergoing elective surgery, especially if there is a high risk of significant blood loss.
- Rapid repletion of iron stores in patients with functional iron deficiency (e.g., in chronic heart failure or cancer patients receiving erythropoiesis-stimulating agents).
Children Below 14 Yr: Not Recommended.
