Hydroxyurea is prescribed by healthcare professionals for the following medical conditions:
- Sickle Cell Disease (SCD): Hydroxyurea is a cornerstone in the management of sickle cell disease, a genetic disorder characterized by misshapen red blood cells that can lead to pain, anemia, and organ damage. It helps by increasing the production of fetal hemoglobin, which is less prone to sickling, thereby reducing the frequency and severity of painful crises.
- Myeloproliferative Disorders: This medication is also used to treat certain myeloproliferative disorders, such as chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), polycythemia vera (PV), and essential thrombocythemia (ET). It helps to reduce the excessive production of blood cells in these conditions.
- Thalassemia: In some cases of thalassemia, hydroxyurea may be prescribed to increase the production of fetal hemoglobin, which can improve anemia and reduce the need for blood transfusions.
- HIV Infection: Hydroxyurea has been used as part of combination therapy in HIV-infected individuals to reduce viral replication and boost immune function. However, it is not a standalone treatment for HIV and is used in conjunction with other antiretroviral drugs.
- Psoriasis: In dermatology, hydroxyurea can be employed to treat psoriasis, a chronic skin condition. It may help to slow down the excessive growth of skin cells and reduce inflammation.
