Indication Dosage
Calcium acetate is a medication used to control the level of phosphate in the blood of people with end-stage renal disease who are undergoing dialysis. It works by binding with dietary phosphate in the digestive tract, preventing it from being absorbed into the bloodstream.
Some indications of calcium acetate may include:
- Hyperphosphatemia: Calcium acetate is primarily used to manage hyperphosphatemia, a condition characterized by high levels of phosphate in the blood.
- End-stage renal disease: This medication is often prescribed to people with end-stage renal disease who require dialysis to remove excess waste and fluids from their bodies.
- Chronic kidney disease: Calcium acetate may also be used to treat people with chronic kidney disease who have high levels of phosphate in their blood.
- Prevention of bone disease: High levels of phosphate in the blood can lead to bone disease. By controlling phosphate levels, calcium acetate may help prevent bone disease in people with kidney problems.
Dosage:
The recommended starting dose of calcium acetate is usually 2 capsules with each meal, up to a maximum of 12 capsules per day. The capsules should be taken with food and plenty of water.
