Sodium amidotrizoate and meglumine amidotrizoate are both iodinated contrast agents used in various radiology procedures to help visualize certain structures and functions in the body.
One of the main indications for these agents is intravenous urography (IVU), also known as intravenous pyelography (IVP). IVU is a radiographic examination that uses contrast material to visualize the urinary system, including the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra. During an IVU procedure, sodium amidotrizoate and meglumine amidotrizoate are injected intravenously into the patient, and X-rays are taken at various intervals to capture images of the contrast material as it passes through the urinary system. This allows healthcare providers to evaluate the function of the urinary system and detect any abnormalities or diseases, such as kidney stones, tumors, or infections.
Sodium amidotrizoate and meglumine amidotrizoate are also used in other diagnostic imaging procedures, such as retrograde pyelography, cystography, hysterosalpingography, arthrography, cholangiography, fistulography, and sialography.
