Drugs For Constipation

Indication Dosage

Constipation: 

Lactulose works as a laxative by drawing water into the intestines, which helps soften stools and promote bowel movements.

Dosage:

  • Adult: Initially 15 Ml Twice Daily, Adjusted According To Response 
  • Children 1-11 Months: 2.5 Ml Twice Daily, Adjusted According To Response; 1-4 Yrs: 2.5-10 Ml Twice Daily, Adjusted According To Response; 5-17 Yrs: 5-20 Ml Twice Daily, Adjusted According To Response. 

Hepatic Encephalopathy (portal Systemic Encephalopathy):

Lactulose is sometimes used as a treatment for hepatic encephalopathy, a condition that occurs as a result of liver failure and can cause confusion, changes in behavior, and coma. Lactulose works by reducing the amount of ammonia in the gut, which can help improve symptoms.

Dosage:

  • Adult: Adjusted According To Response To 30-50 Ml 3 Times A Day, Subsequently Adjusted To Produce 2-3soft Stools Per Day. 
  • Children: Not Recommended. Lactulose May Take Up To 48 Hours To Act.

  • Susp /Syp: Per 5 ml: Lactulose 3.35gm. Powd: Per Sachet: Lactulose 10gm.
