Drugs For Constipation

Indication Dosage

Macrogol, also known as polyethylene glycol, is used for several indications, including:

Chronic Constipation: 

Macrogol works as a lubricant laxative by promoting hydration of the stool, which can help relieve chronic constipation.

Dosage:

  • Adult & Children Above 12 Yr: 1-3 Sachets Daily In Divided Doses Usually For Up To 2 Weeks; Maintenance 1-2 Sachets Daily, Contents Of Each Sachet Dissolved In Half A Glass (approx125 Ml) Of Water. 

Faecal Impaction: 

Macrogol is sometimes used as a treatment for faecal impaction, a condition in which hard, dry stool becomes lodged in the rectum and cannot be expelled. Macrogol works by promoting hydration of the stool and helping to soften and remove the impacted stool.

Dosage:

  • Child Above 12 Yrs & Adult: 4 Sachets On First Day, Then Increasedin Steps Of 2 Sachets Daily, Total Daily Dose To Be Drunkwithin a 6 Hour Period, After disimpaction, Switch To maintenance Laxative Therapy If Required; Maximum 8 Sachets Per Day, Contents Of Each Sachet Dissolved In Half A Glass (approx125 Ml) Of Water

  • Oral Powder: Per Sachet: Macrogol '3350 (polyethylene Glycol '3350) 13.125gm, Sodium Bicarbonate 178.5mg, Sodium Chloride 350.7mg, Potassium Chloride 46.6mg.

Risk Cannot Be Ruled Out.

Contra Indications

  • Crohn's Disease, Renal Impairment, Intestinal Obstruction, Intestinal Perforation, Paralytic Ileus, Severe Inflammatory Conditions Of The Intestinal Tract, Toxic Megacolon, Ulcerative Colitis.
