Ethinylestradiol + Drospirenone is a combination of two hormones used as a form of hormonal contraception, often referred to as "the pill." It works by preventing ovulation (the release of an egg from the ovaries) and thickening the cervical mucus to prevent sperm from reaching the egg.
In addition to contraception, Ethinylestradiol + Drospirenone may also be used to treat certain conditions such as acne, premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
Some common indications for Ethinylestradiol + Drospirenone include:
Contraception: Ethinylestradiol + Drospirenone is a highly effective form of birth control when taken correctly.
Acne: Ethinylestradiol + Drospirenone can help improve acne in women by reducing androgen levels, which can contribute to the development of acne.
PMDD: Premenstrual dysphoric disorder is a severe form of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) that can cause emotional and physical symptoms. Ethinylestradiol + Drospirenone can help alleviate these symptoms by regulating hormone levels.
PCOS: Polycystic ovary syndrome is a hormonal disorder that can cause irregular periods, excess hair growth, and acne. Ethinylestradiol + Drospirenone can help regulate menstrual cycles and improve acne in women with PCOS.
Dosage:
The pill is taken once a day, at the same time each day, for 21 or 28 days. The 28-day pack contains 21 active pills containing the hormones and 7 inactive pills. The inactive pills are taken during the last week to allow for menstruation.
